Red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) are considered carnivores. Their favorite things are rodents, rabbits and small birds. However I suspect they will eat just about any available. Industrious by nature, taking advantage of any habitat, wild or otherwise, Colorado Red Foxes are becoming more common in the urban setting.
The video shot from the balcony of my accommodations in Steamboat Springs, reveals a typical condominium construction site just before sunset. Our friend has emerged from a burrow skillfully located in a rock retaining wall surrounding a pool area. Laying in repose before setting off on an evenings adventure. Waiting perhaps for the guy behind the camera to throw him the last muffin from the gift basket.
Closing a memorable vignette of Colorado life, the final scene has our propagandist begging at the front door. Somebody had indeed been feeding this puppy! Alas my little friend, no human treats for you… on your way and thank you for a wonderful encounter.
